Plans to introduce modern technology for rice farming in the Philippines were announced by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) last month, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA). This collaboration with the DA will also involve the Taiwan Technical Mission.
“By introducing modern technology from Taiwan, we aim to strengthen the Philippines’ capability to provide accessible and affordable rice. Ensuring that even in the face of natural calamities, no one goes hungry,” said TECO Representative Wallace Minn-Gan Chow.
This project is intended to help achieve the Marcos administration’s objectives for secure and affordable food.
He further emphasized that a cooperative project to enhance rice production in Isabela and Cagayan provinces will be launched soon.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) recently reported a decline in annual local palay production, mainly due to the combined impact of El Niño, weather disturbances, and La Niña.
For 2024, palay output is expected to decrease from the initial target of 20.4 million metric tons (MT) to 19.41 million MT.
However, the DA has assured that rice supplies will remain stable, thanks to additional imports, which had reached approximately 3.57 million tons as of October 14.
Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Director Cheloy Garafil expressed gratitude to TECO for donating Taiwan rice to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for Filipinos affected by Typhoon Kristine.
‘We would like to thank TECO for coordinating the turnover of 500 metric tons of rice. The latest shipment, which arrived on October 15, is part of a 2,000 MT rice donation intended for distribution to those in need and victims of calamities,’ she said.
She added that the remaining 500 MT is expected to arrive in November.
“Taiwan reaffirms its commitment to stand with the Philippines as you endure these challenging times. The 500 (metric) tons of rice donated here today symbolizes Taiwan’s compassion and solidarity with Filipino people,” said Min-Gan Chow.
The rice donation will benefit families affected by Typhoon Kristine in the Bicol Region as well as those impacted by Typhoon Leon in Northern Luzon.
